Charnock Girls U13s (2) v (2) Wingerworth JSA U13s

Michael Carl16 Mar - 23:42

Last week felt rusty. This week? This week was something else entirely. Charnock U13s travelled over to Wingerworth, came back from 2-0 down against the unbeaten league leaders, and left with a point that felt like much more.

The original home fixture had to be switched to Wingerworth's ground as the Charnock pitch was waterlogged. That meant a trip to Chesterfield to face Wingerworth JSA, top of the league, unbeaten all season and yet to drop a single point.

Charnock lined up in their bright green Olive Venture Properties kit, with Keeper Chloe looking the part in striking pink between the sticks. Thirteen players available today, with Amaya and Keavey unavailable, but there was no shortage of spirit.

Nevaeh got things moving straight away, with the ball working to Rae, and on to Rose, who tested the side netting early on. A sign of intent. Maisie was getting good distance on her throws, and Nevaeh launched a huge ball into the area to find Summer, who was already looking like she meant business on the right wing. Evie and Eva held firm as Charnock settled into their four-at-the-back shape, with Maisie, Eva, Evie and Georgie forming the defensive line.

Wingerworth's number 9 gave Chloe her first real test with a sharp run, and Chloe dealt with it well. But Wingerworth pressed again and this time a low ball got past her to make it 1-0. They then came straight at Charnock from the restart, winning a corner and keeping Georgie busy. Charnock were pressing back hard though - Nevaeh and Rae at the other end with a good run and a decent chance.

Wingerworth kept the pressure on and Maisie had to be at her best, heading clear and then winning a clean throw after holding off two opponents. Estelle looked strong, chasing everything and sending a huge kick forward, with Rae and Summer chasing. Nevaeh's long throws were creating good chances for Charnock, and Eva, Evie, and Georgie were doing a great job of breaking up Wingerworth’s attacks. The team were linking up well, Rose was forced to defend too, but turned quickly and drove forward with Raegan and Summer.

Rae was sharp, winning a loose ball and driving forward before being fouled and having to leave the field. Grace came on and made her presence felt immediately. Nevaeh stepped up for the free kick from distance, had a proper go, and it was a great effort. Georgie then made a vital clearance to win a corner after a nervy moment, but Summer's throw put Raegan in space to push on again.

Eva and Summer were organising everything around them, shouting and helping the team stay on the same page. Chloe too continued to keep Wingerworth at bay, and Maisie set Rose up with a half chance before Eva pulled off a brilliant sliding tackle under real pressure. Wingerworth's number 11 forced Chloe to work again to push a shot wide. And at the other end, Summer's throw sent Raegan clean through one-on-one with the keeper - it was Charnock’s best chance of the half, but the ball slipped wide.

With Charnock looking sharp, the game had other ideas - Chloe made a fantastic diving save at the feet of a Wingerworth player, and with Evie and Maisie scrambling to clear, but it fell kindly for Wingerworth to make it 2-0. Evie and Chloe both made more fine stops before the half time whistle, but 2-0 it was.

Charnock had the wind behind them in the second half and they were going to need it. Estelle came out in no mood to take a backwards step, putting in tackle after tackle and pressing forward. Chloe continued to frustrate Wingerworth, setting Raegan free for a great run before she was caught. Summer, hitting her stride, took a free kick from range and it was another big effort. Wingerworth then had a golden chance, just needing a tap-in, but the ball somehow stayed out.

Then Chloe stayed down injured after a brave stop and the game paused while she got treatment. A few minutes later, up she got, and her booming shout of "KEEPERS!" let everyone know she was fine. Grace and Estelle then tested Wingerworth with a shot that was saved.

Grace and Rose combined well, Rose driving into the box and the ball finding Raegan, who finished it well. 2-1 and the Charnock supporters erupted.

Raegan’s goal changed everything. Rose had a huge run, Amelia was there in support, Maisie drove a free kick forward with the wind helping, and Summer slid a beautiful pass through the middle to set Rose away again. The defence, Evie, Georgie, Maisie and Eva, were looking organised and strong. Raegan, who had been brilliant all game in the middle, won a corner.

Rae and Estelle kept winning ground and forced another corner. Rose swung it into the box and somehow, through a scramble of bodies, it ended up in the net. 2-2! Amelia was there, Estelle was there, but Rose claimed it.

Charnock pushed for a winner. Amelia pressed hard from a corner. Chloe was called on again with a string of saves in the closing minutes, brilliant stuff, with Georgie helping to mop up. Summer, dealing calmly with taunts, got on with the job and helped out in defence. Three Wingerworth corners in a row, but on the last one Charnock broke quickly with Raegan, Nevaeh and Rose all driving forward, and Raegan and Amelia coming agonisingly close. Estelle then had a shot that looked like it had goal written all over it, but it slipped wide.

And that was that, what a comeback. 2-2 against the top of the league. Yet to drop a point all season. Not anymore.

Another difficult choice for the match awards with every girl having a claim. Parents' player, Chloe and Manager's player, Estelle. Well deserved girls - this was a fantastic game, and a huge improvement. Roll on next week at home against Aston Swallownest. Up the Charnock!
