There was a buzz around the pitch on Saturday morning as the Charnock U13s looked to make it three wins in a row and climb the table.
A huge Charnock welcome went to new signing Amaya, making her debut, and what a debut it was, earning her the Parent’s Player of the Match for an impressive first outing.
Wombwell kicked off, and the opening few minutes were scrappy. The visitors had the first real chance, but Eva came to the rescue with a superb last-ditch tackle. That moment seemed to wake Charnock and from then on, the girls stepped up. Rose went close first with a shot into the side netting, and Keavey then tested the keeper with a powerful strike.
After a short pause to patch up Eva’s glasses, Charnock earned a free kick on the edge of Wombwell area. Keavey tapped it short to Nevaeh, who absolutely thundered it into the top corner to make it 1-0.
Wombwell tried to push back but ran into some slick one-two play from Raegan and Rae, working beautifully down the left. Evie was cool and confident at the back, launching huge clearances forward, one of which led to Charnock’s second. Raegan latched onto the long ball, ran forward and fired low across goal - the keeper got a touch, but not enough. 2-0.
Amelia looked lively throughout, showing skill and close control in midfield, constantly creating chances for her teammates. When Summer came on, Charnock shifted up another gear. Raegan slipped a perfect pass through to Keavey, winning a corner. Summer played it short to Rose, who turned and fired narrowly into the side netting.
There was a moment of comedy when a wayward clearance sent a chair (and its unlucky occupant) toppling over on the sideline - much to the amusement of both sets of supporters!
Moments later, Rae, now affectionately nicknamed R9 by Coach Wes for her Ronaldo-like flair, showed her class, gliding through the Wombwell defence before unselfishly squaring the ball to Summer, who tucked it away for 3-0. Confidence was flowing, and Summer soon rattled the post with a fierce drive, with Nevaeh reacting quickest to slot home her second of the day. 4-0.
Rae then hit the post herself before debutant Amaya raced in to make a fantastic recovery tackle. From the corner, Rose picked out Nevaeh, who tapped home to complete her hat-trick.
The goals kept coming - Rae was on hand again to break through and score her first of the season that had her teammates and especially Wes celebrating wildly. Straight from the restart, Georgie and Maisie combined well to find Summer, whose run and cross gave Rose another chance, well saved by the keeper. But there was no stopping Grace, who finished another cross from Summer for 7-0 just before half-time.
At the break, Manager James shuffled things around, and the girls continued to play well. Grace, now leading the line and playing with an injured elbow, was a constant threat and soon added two more to complete her hat-trick - 9-0. Amaya too, linking beautifully with Amelia, who made a fantastic solo run from halfway only to be denied by the keeper.
Rose came close again after a nice through ball from Eva, but the Wombwell keeper was having a brave game. And at the back, the defensive trio of Georgie, Evie, and Eva barely gave Wombwell a sniff. Their communication was spot-on, earning Evie and Eva the nickname ‘Ant and Dec’ from Coach Wes – that one might stick!
Another great throw from Maisie set up Rae to find Rose, who finished smartly for 10-0. Nevaeh tested the keeper again with another missile of a free kick before Chloe, Charnock’s safe pair of hands, was finally called into action - confidently saving a well-struck Wombwell free kick to keep her clean sheet intact.
Rose had one chalked off for offside before Nevaeh smashed in her fourth, then completed her five-star performance with another clinical finish after linking beautifully with Rae and Amaya. Final score: 12-0, and an all-round team performance to be proud of.
After the game, Manager James said he thought all the team listened to what he said at training - not to be complacent and take each game as it comes. Adding that the ‘development and togetherness in this team in such a short time has been brilliant. Amaya fitted in fantastically too, especially for someone who’s only just met the girls - massive well done and welcome to Charnock!’
Chloe’s communication and leadership at the back were superb throughout, keeping everyone organised and deservedly securing the clean sheet. And a special match report mention goes to Assistant Referee Phil, who bravely took on the flag under a storm of good-natured heckling from the Charnock parents!
A brilliant display all round - well played girls, and well done as well to Parents Player Amaya, and Coach’s Girl of the Game Grace.
Up the Charnock, and good luck to Wombwell Town for the rest of the season and beyond!
