Charnock made the trip on a blustery Saturday, donning their green OVP away kit and looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat.
Charnock started on the front foot, Nevaeh kicking things off and the team were straight into attack, winning a couple of early corners and keeping Pogmoor pinned back.
Nevaeh was a handful from the off, long throw-ins, driving forward, and testing the Pogmoor keeper from a tight angle. Raegan was a constant presence in midfield, battling through challenges and linking play, and Amaya was twisting and turning brilliantly.
At the back, Chloe was commanding between the sticks, organising loudly. Evie and Eva were solid and composed, with Maisie putting in a real shift too, with her throws down the wing pushing forwards. Estelle and Grace were busy throughout, combining cleverly to keep attacks moving, while Rose was putting herself about on the wing whilst painfully copping a point blank clearance with her opposite Pogmoor player showing great sportsmanship to check she was okay.
Chances came and went. Grace went close, Rose had a shot saved, Nevaeh nearly bundled one in that was denied by a last-ditch clearance, and Summer delivered brilliant lofted balls that deserved more. The first half was mostly played in the Pogmoor half, but Pogmoor defended well and the scoreline at the break read 0-0. Frustrating, though not surprising given the ball spent part of the game stuck up a tree.
Pogmoor did grow into the match as the half wore on and Chloe was called upon to make a couple of good saves, including a sharp stop from Pogmoor's number 7.
Manager James had a simple request at half time: score in the first ten minutes of the second half. The girls delivered. Rose made a driving run down the wing, kept going after crossing into the box, and ending up firing the ball high into the Pogmoor net. 1-0.
From there, Charnock grew in confidence, helped on as Pogmoor were now kicking into the wind, their goal kicks dropping short and inviting Charnock pressure. Estelle took full advantage, firing efforts from distance. Rae, Raegan and Summer were heavily involved, with Rae unlucky not to add to the tally. And Amaya was causing constant problems, driving forwards with her Cruyff turns and intelligent passing.
Then came the goals that sealed the game for Charnock. Keavey played a lovely ball through to Nevaeh, who finished coolly to make it 2-0. And with Nevaeh now flying, she pushed forward again shortly after and slotted home to make it 3-0. Chloe kept her composure at the other end, pulling off a fine one-on-one save to keep the clean sheet as Pogmoor's number 14 threatened late on.
Rae, Rose, Summer and Grace all had chances to add a fourth, but Pogmoor's keeper had other ideas. The final whistle went with the scoreline unchanged and Charnock coming away with the win.
After the match, James handed out the awards. The Parent's Player went to Keavey who had a great game, and the Manager's Player went to Nevaeh, coming out of retirement for two good goals to restore her confidence. James said it was a much-needed win and felt the girls could have had a few more goals on another day. He was pleased with some of the passing and the way the defence dug in, and Chloe too for adding another clean sheet to her collection.
He’d asked for a reaction from the team today, and that's what he got. Three goals, three points, and a clean sheet.
Thanks to Pogmoor for hosting us today, their players worked non-stop all through the match, playing their football the right way and with great team spirit from start to finish. Charnock will look forward to the reverse fixture later this month.
Well done girls, lets take this into a good run as the season ticks down. Up the Charnock!
