Charnock Ridgeway Girls U11 Reds (1) V Sheffield United CF White (3)
Playing at home, we welcomed Sheffield Utd for the third game of the post-season cup. A slightly later kick off than usual, and perfect weather for a match.
First half we started with Grace in goal and Evie M and Erin in defence. The midfield trio of Merci, Jess, and Lacey, with Niamh up front looked positive. Merci made use of her speed and natural ball control skills to take on the opposition down the flanks. Niamh’s game awareness has improved over the course of the season and she is becoming a much stronger attacker for it.
Both teams took some time to find their feet, with neither side really managing to get a proper grip of the game in the first half. Coach May made subs after about 10 mins, swapping Erin and Jess for Poppy and Lacey. Lacey went into her preferred role in defence, with Poppy slotting into CM in place of Jess. Evie May moved up top, with Nianh dropping back to the left of midfield. Despite these attacking changes, Sheffield Utd probably edged the first half with a few more attacking moves however neither keeper was really called upon to make a real save. We went into halftime drawing 0-0.
Second half, Sheffield Utd came out much brighter, and soon got the opening goal. Grace managed to get a hand to the shot but unfortunately couldn’t keep the ball out of the net.
We needed to apply more pressure on Sheffield Utd, and made a further change upfront moving Niamh back up top and bringing on Jess to try and solidify the middle of the park. Sheffield Utd kept the pressure up and were rewarded with two quick goals. Our best route to goal seemed to be down the wings with both Merci and Poppy making driving runs at their defenders. This finally paid off when Merci stepped inside from one of her runs down the line and had a long range shot. Evie May managed to disguise a touch in front of their keeper and it rolled right in the net. We were pushing harder after that but couldn't find another break though.
For the second game in a row the result finished 1-3. We struggled to get a hold on the game even though the commitment our players put in couldn’t be faulted.
